Types, wear, and care
Retainers come as fixed wires bonded behind the lower teeth, or with wires on the front of the teeth, and as removable clear trays. Many people end up with a combination, chosen for their case rather than by default.
Wear instructions are specific to you and will be written down, not just said. Clean them as instructed, keep them away from heat, and store them in the case rather than a napkin.
Lost one, or teeth drifting

Call the office. A lost or broken retainer is a common, fixable problem, and the sooner it is replaced the less there is to undo.
If teeth have already shifted, Dr. Khan will look and tell you honestly whether a new retainer is enough or whether some movement is needed first.
